Unity of names and attributes. In the Islamic faith and in the chapter on God’s unification, we find the science of monotheism that studies everything related to God’s essence, including names, attributes, rules, principles, and sayings of Islamic sects.

What to believe in names and attributes[عدل]

It is obligatory to believe in what God described Himself with in His Book, or His Messenger described Him with, of the Beautiful Names and Sublime Attributes and passing them on as they came in a manner appropriate to Him – glory be to Him – as it is also known as the belief in the uniqueness of God – the Mighty and Sublime – with absolute perfection in all aspects with the attributes of greatness. Glory, and beauty, by proving what God affirmed for Himself, or His Messenger affirmed for Him in terms of names and attributes, and their meanings and rulings mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah.

As defined by Sheikh Abd al-Rahman bin Nasser al-Saadi, “Tawhid al-Asmaa wa’l-Sifat: WIt is the belief in the uniqueness of the Lord – may He be glorified and exalted – with absolute perfection in all aspects, with the attributes of greatness, majesty, and beauty that no participant shares with Him in any way..

And that is by proving what God affirmed for Himself, or His Messenger affirmed for Him in terms of all the names, attributes, their meanings, and their rulings contained in the Book and the Sunnah in a manner appropriate to His greatness and majesty, without negating any of them, nor denying them, nor distorting them, nor representing them. He denied what he denied himself, or his Messenger denied him from the shortcomings and defects, and everything that contradicts his perfection.^[1]

The meaning of disruption, distortion, and representation[عدل]

the actingIt is the belief that any of the attributes of God Almighty is similar to the attributes of creatures. Or conditioningIt is the belief that the attributes of God Almighty are in the manner of anything that you can imagine, comprehend, or limit. The intent is not to deny the existence of a modality for the attributes of God, rather the intent is to negate the knowledge of creation in this modality, as indicated by Imam Malik, may God have mercy on him, and other predecessors when they were asked about the Almighty’s saying: The Most Merciful rose over the throne. [طـه:5]. They said: The istiwa is known, the modality is unknown, belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is heresy. Likewise, Rabia Sheikh Malik before him said: The Istiwa is known, the modality is unknown, and from God is the explanation, and it is upon the Messenger to communicate, and upon us is faith. As for meaning impartiallyIn the language, it is said: He exalted himself from the ugly, impartially, i.e.: He removed it. The legal intent is to banish everything that is not befitting of God, Glory be to Him, such as keeping Him away from the wife, the child, the Sunnah, sleep, and the like. Or deactivationIt is the negation of the attributes of God Almighty or His names and the denial of the existence of the attributes of God Almighty in Him. Or interpretationIt is a term used in three meanings: one of them: interpretation, in the sense of interpretation, and this is the most common term used by the interpreters of the Qur’an. The second: Interpretation is the truth to which speech is deduced, as the Most High said: Do they wait for anything but its interpretation? [الأعراف:53]
That is, do they wait except for the occurrence of what he was told about, as Joseph, peace be upon him, said when his vision occurred: This is the interpretation of my vision from before. [يوسف:100]. And the third meaning: it is diverting the word from the most likely possibility to the most likely possibility for evidence that is associated with it. If it is referred to the likely possibility without evidence, then it is distortion and blameworthy, which is the meaning intended in the phrase mentioned in the question.^[2]

The importance of unifying names and attributes[عدل]

1. Belief in Him is included in belief in God – the Mighty and Majestic – since faith in God is upright until the servant believes in God’s names and attributes.
2. Knowing the Tawheed of the Names and Attributes and believing in it as the righteous predecessors believed – worshiping God – the Mighty and Sublime – God commanded us to do so, and obedience to Him is obligatory.
3. Belief in it, as the righteous predecessors believed, is a path of safety from deviation and slippage that the people of ta’teel, representation, and others who deviated in this matter fell into.
4. Believing in it on the true face is a safety from God’s threat. God Almighty said in the Holy Qur’an (And leave those who deviate in His names. They will be requited for what they used to do). [الأعراف: 180].
5. This science is one of the most honorable sciences, and for it ever. Because it contains knowledge of God, and not a creation of His creation or any of the things, and in the hadith of the Prophet: “The best of you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it” and “He who God intends good for him to teach him in religion.”
6. The greatest verse in the Qur’an is the verse of the Kursi, but it was the greatest verse because it included this kind of monotheism.
7. Surah Al-Ikhlas is equal to one-third of the Qur’an. Because she was sincere in describing God.
8. Belief in Him yields great fruits and various servitudes, and some of that becomes clear to us when we talk about the fruits of belief in the Oneness of the Names and Attributes.
9. Knowledge of the names and attributes of God opens the door for the servant to know the Lord, Blessed and Exalted be He.
10. The basis of true knowledge is belief in God and His names and attributes.
11. Knowledge of God’s names and attributes is the life of hearts.^[3]
