future plans[عدل]
In view of the area and breadth of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the many regions it includes, which are punctuated by many valleys of different sizes that often drain into the seas or deserts, the matter requires expanding the construction of dams and increasing their number to meet the huge flow of torrential waters coming through those valleys. In order to achieve the maximum benefit from it and to protect it from its dangers, as the nature of the Kingdom is dominated by desert lands or high mountains, and most of the population centers are located on the banks of the valleys or near them because they are the source of water gathering.
The report stated that the importance of dams in the Kingdom is based on the importance of each dam for the region in which it is located. However, importance can be given to dams with high storage, such as the “King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Dam” on Wadi Bisha, which has a storage of more than 325 million cubic meters and contributed greatly to supporting the sources of energy. Water for drinking and agriculture in the region and the Najran Dam, which has a storage of more than 86 million cubic meters and has a fundamental role in protecting the city of Najran from the dangers of torrents that were constantly sweeping it, in addition to providing groundwater for the region and the Jazan Dam, which has a storage of more than 50 million cubic meters and works to reserve the torrents that The area is invaded and drained to irrigate an integrated agricultural area of more than 6,000 hectares through an integrated irrigation project attached to the dam, as well as dams that are used to secure drinking water, such as the Abha Dam, Al-Aqiq Dam, and the Turbah and Ardah Dams underground, which were implemented in 1404 AH, and they are among the first dams Executed in the world of this kind, and they had a major role in securing drinking water for Taif Governorate and Al-Baha region now.
The main objectives of building dams in the Kingdom[عدل]
- Replacing groundwater in the dam area and providing water for wells in the areas behind the dams.
- Securing drinking water for some areas through purification plants built on dams.
- Securing irrigation water for agricultural purposes by direct irrigation of agricultural areas behind dams through irrigation projects organized for this.
- Protecting cities and villages from the dangers of torrents and floods, and preserving the lives and property of citizens.
Types of dams[عدل]
Due to the different topography of the Kingdom and the size of the valleys in it, several types of dams have been implemented in terms of construction, according to technical studies, to suit the nature and topography of the valley on which the dam is built. The types of dams established in the Kingdom are limited to four types:
- concrete dams.
- Earthen dams.
- Cumulus dams.
- underground dams.
running dams[عدل]
Dams are benefited from by operating them according to the programs that are prepared for each dam to achieve the goals for which it was built and according to what is dictated by the need in the area of each dam. Dams programs are subject to periodic study and evaluation after each flood period through the supervisors of operations.
There are 51 dams in Saudi Arabia with a height of more than 15 meters. The number of these dams will reach 61 before the end of this decade. The King Fahd Dam on Wadi Bisha is the largest dam in Saudi Arabia in terms of storage capacity, and Wadi Hali Dam comes in second place. Wadi Bish Dam in Bish Governorate, Jazan Region, is considered the highest dam in Saudi Arabia in terms of height, reaching a height of 106 meters, followed by King Fahd Dam with 103 meters.
